Duo’s Contributions to Police Work Bark and Bite

MORRISTOWN 3— A Bernardsville couple who have donated K-9 police dogs to agencies around the United States were honored Wednesday by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office for donating dogs to two departments in New Jersey.

Dr. Caesar DePaço and his wife, Deanne Padovani-DePaço, were awarded a plaque and named honorary deputy sheriff by Morris County Sheriff Edward V. Rochford at the county’s K-9 facility for their contributions to the Deal Police Department and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit.

“The K-9 unit is spectacular,” Rochford said in front of a small gathering of officers from the sheriff’s office, Deal and Hillsborough, among others. “I admire them. They know I support them tremendously.”

Prior to presenting the DePaço family with a plaque, Sgt. Aaron Tomasini, who conducts hands on training with the K-9 dogs, expressed his gratitude.

“From deep down, (I am) very much appreciative,” he said, “to get these K-9 officers and help get them out in the public.”2

Dr. Caesar DePaço is the founder and CEO of Branchburg-based Summit Nutritionals International ®, a manufacturer of raw nutritional supplements. Deanne Padovani-DePaço is the President of the company. Together, they have both donated more than 13 dogs to agencies around the country, from Maryland to Oklahoma City.

In an interview earlier this year, Padovani-DePaço said she and her husband donated their first dog to the Hillsborough Police Department in 2013. After that, Padovani-DePaço said the feelings of gratitude and fulfillment became addicting.

“It feels super great to see the emotion and the reaction of the recipients of the dogs,” Padovani-DePaço said. “They are always so humble and grateful.”

On Wednesday morning, Padovani-DePaço echoed a similar sentiment.

“This is the least of the honor,” she said, as she held the plaque (Dr. Caesar DePaço was not present because he was in Florida, where he serves as the  Honorary Consul of Portugal in Palm Coast, Florida). “The honor is to assist the K-9 unit not only in this county but also in the nation…we’re so grateful to be a part of your team.”Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 7.21.42 PM

Along with the plaque, the DePaço’s were also named Honorary Deputy Sheriffs by Rochford, who quipped about the two using the title to their advantage when traveling across the country.

“When you’re doing 90 miles an hour in Arizona and you get stopped, tell them you’re with us,” he said.

Following the brief awards ceremony, Tomasini led a demonstration of how officers train and deploy K-9 units in the field. He said Morris County has 14 K-9 dogs in service with seven handlers. In all, K-9 units can be deployed to all 39 municipalities in Morris County, Tomasini said.

He said obedience is key with training the dogs.

“It’s just like a child,” he said. “If a child can (be taught to) listen, so can our dogs.”

Tomasini said the dogs in Morris County can handle an array of tasks in the field, from chasing down fleeing subjects to sniffing for explosives and narcotics.

He also touted the dogs’ abilities to go above and beyond what a human officer is capable of. Tomasini said K-9 dogs instill feelings of fear in a subject that a human cannot, and that their speed and agility is unparalleled to humans.

“Every time I come do an apprehension (with a K-9 dog), I win,” Tomasini said.

Reflections From A Man Involved In An Incredible Journey

Reflections from a man involved in an incredible journey. I want to take this opportunity to share my story and involvement in an amazing journey to be a part of a project that has changed my life. When I met Dr. DePaço it was obvious he had a love for dogs and an appreciation for law enforcement and their contribution to the community. I could never have fathomed how dedicated they were to giving back to the men and women that served beside me.

To understand my appreciation I should first tell you about my lifelong goal of being a K9 Officer. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a Police Officer, but it wasn’t until my cousin introduced me to his K9 Partner that I instantly knew that this was going to be my dream. In 2008, I was granted that dream by being named the first K9 Officer in Hillsborough, New Jersey. My first dog, Raider, was an amazing partner and he exceeded all the expectations that any K9 Officer could ask for and then some.

Unfortunately, after five years Raider had to retire due to a genetic spinal condition. I had lived my dream for five years, but knew I had so much more to give. This is when Dr. DePaço changed my life.

Dr DePaço committed to purchasing a K9 for Hillsborough as well as a vehicle that was much needed. Again, I was chosen as the K9 Officer. Imagine being able to live your dream twice!

This is where my life changed. Dr DePaço decided to make it his mission to facilitate K9s to police departments that were in need. I remember sitting at home and reading about the Oklahoma City dog that was stabbed by a criminal he was chasing. I think any dog owner can sympathize about how devastating the loss of your partner can be. Then I received a call from Dr. DePaço about how he wanted to help. He expressed to me about how he was not only concerned about the loss of the dog, but he was also concerned about how the handler and the family were coping with the situation. This is where the journey starts.

With Dr. DePaço’s permission I facilitated the purchase of Oklahoma City’s next K9 from Vohne Liche kennels. Since then I have been the middle man of a total of 15 dogs that Dr. DePaço has purchased for departments in need. It is one thing to receive a dog, but to be witness to another officer receiving such a generous gift is unforgettable.

I owe a lot to Dr. DePaço. My first dog, Raider, is living a better life thanks to Droi-Kon ®, I have a second dog that is working daily to go catch the “bad guys” and I have been a part of his amazing project to provide K9 dogs to departments that needed help.

Thank You Caesar DePaço for your contribution to law enforcement around the country!

Flórida Tem Um Novo Consulado Honorário de Portugal (Translated)

The Honorary Consulate of Portugal in Palm Coast, Florida (USA) officially opens to the public tomorrow, April 1. Caesar DePaço, Ph.D. will be the new Honorary Consul in Palm Coast. Originally from the Azores and a US resident for 23 years, Caesar is a businessman, leading the world in the production of raw nutritional materials.

Palm Coast will also ensure, as provided for in Regulation Consular, the defense of rights and legitimate interests of the State and of its nationals in the district, in coordination with the Portuguese Embassy in the US, as well as practicing civil status records and notary, issue citizen cards and travel documents, as well as voter registration operations.

A source from the Secretariat of State said that the possibility of installing a similar structure in South Florida is being studied, though no definitive dates and locations have been determined.

In addition to the Embassy in Washington, Portugal has four Consulate Generals in US cities (Newark, New York, Boston and San Francisco) and 11 other Consular Representations.
